Elvis Presley
What a gift. What a talent. How lucky are those
of us who were alive when Elvis Presley walked the Earth?
I can plough through the superlatives in an effort to sum
up Elvis Presley's talent, but there is only one word that
even begins to grasp how very extraordinary this immense man
was and that word is phenomenon. Elvis Presley is a genuine
phenomenon. Many deeply talented individuals ooze charisma,
but Elvis literally dripped with charisma. He was saturated
in the stuff! If you were lucky enough to be near him and
he flicked a finger you may have been blessed to have a drop
splash on you - mind you, if Elvis flicked a finger it probably
rained charisma and you'd have gotten drenched! ... If whatever
Elvis had was a drink, that drink would be one seriously potent
cocktail - so potent in fact it would probably poison mere
mortal men. Whatever Elvis's power was it would ruin most
people. We couldn't handle it. Too strong. Too addictive.
And, of course, that incredibly potent power would ultimately
destroy us all. It destroyed even Elvis in the end.
Notice, I haven't even mentioned his songs yet...
His voice was awesome, his style simply stunning. He was also
too good-looking for his own good... Yes, I'm suffering from
extreme jealousy! Wouldn't we all want to be Elvis? I think
it's only fair that we all get to be Elvis if only for one
day... one hour or even a minute... For one guy to be blessed
with so much simply doesn't seem fair... And yet he blew it!
He couldn't take the pressure of being Elvis... Not even with
42 years practice... But at least he had 42 years of being
a living God... That's a big question... Would you swop 80
odd years as a mere mortal for 42 years as Elvis? Hold on
I've got to think about that... Haven't we all? We can't resist.
We would all love to have what he had... Sorry, couldn't resist
that rant.
I loved the guy. So many people I know loved
him. He was genuinely loved by so many. It wasn't just about
his music. Like I said, he had a seriously great voice, but
it was always more than that. What though....?
